Shelbyville, IN – May 22nd, 2025 – When tasked with naming Major Health Partners’ new da Vinci 5 Surgical System, many elementary classrooms across Shelby County put on their thinking caps and submitted creative entries. After reviewing all the wonderful suggestions, the MHP General Surgeons sat down and selected the top names. The competition was so tough that we brought in the MHP OB/GYN Department to be the tie breaker! We’re excited to introduce you to Fixie, our new surgical robot!

MHP received many amazing name submissions, but there could only be one winner. Congratulations to Ms. Volk’s first-grade class at St. Joseph Elementary School in Shelbyville, Indiana! On May 22nd, MHP General Surgeon Dr. Sano visited their classroom to talk about the da Vinci 5, share what a day in the life of a surgeon looks like, and celebrate the class’s achievement. The students enjoyed a pizza party while asking Dr. Sano lots of great questions, and Ms. Volk received a $250 prize for classroom supplies.

According to Madison, a student in Ms. Volk’s class, “The reason why I picked the name Fixie is that it fixes people, and the way it fixes people makes me really happy!”

The da Vinci 5 Surgical System is the latest advancement in robotic-assisted surgery, offering enhanced precision, control, and safety for minimally invasive procedures. It features groundbreaking Force Feedback technology, allowing surgeons to feel pressure during surgery for gentler, more accurate movements. With improved 3D imaging, increased computing power, and an ergonomic surgeon console, the system supports better outcomes and faster recovery times. The da Vinci 5 is used across multiple specialties, including urology, gynecology, general, thoracic, and cardiac surgery. For more information on the da Vinci 5, click here.

We’d like to thank all the classrooms that participated in MHP’s Robot Superpower: Name the Robot Competition! We were thrilled by the creativity and enthusiasm of every submission. Once again, congratulations to Mrs. Volk’s classroom on being our winners!
