Preventative Screenings at MHP

We provide preventative screenings for those who live in and around the Shelbyville and Shelby County areas. These screenings are health care services that are used to prevent illnesses, disease and other health problems, or to detect illness at an early stage when treatment is likely to work best. A doctor may recommend a screening for you, or you may decide you want to have a screening based on your family history and personal risk factors.

Heart Screenings

Know your risk of heart disease.

A heart scan, also called a coronary calcium scan, uses a special CT test to provide pictures of the patient’s heart for their doctor to detect and measure calcium-containing plaque in the coronary (heart) arteries. This calcification is measured and given a score. When this score is combined with other health information, your doctor can use the score to develop a treatment plan for reducing your risk for heart disease.

Who should have a heart scan?

Anyone with two or more of the following risk factors:

  • Over the age of 40, younger than 80
  • Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 or Type 2 Cigarette smoker or significant smoking history
  • Hypertension or anyone being treated for hypertension
  • Family history of heart disease

When is a heart scan NOT recommended?

Anyone who is already known to have one or more of the following conditions is not recommended to have a heart scan:

  • Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) or myocardial infarction (heart attack)
  • History of Cardiac Stents or Coronary Artery Bypass (CABG)
  • Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD)
  • History of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)

  • Results given by nursing staff

Who should have a lung screening?

Bone Density Screenings

Check your bone health.

Because bone loss often occurs without symptoms, routine screening is key. A simple bone density test can help detect early changes and allow your care team to take steps to protect your bones— such as optimizing nutrition (calcium and vitamin D), recommending strength-building exercises, or considering additional treatments if needed.

Who Should have a Bone Density Screening?

  • Postmenopausal women younger than 65 or men ages 50–69 with one or more of the following risk factors:
    • Low body weight
    • Parent with a history of hip fracture
