MHP serves many people, some of whom have difficulty communicating in English. We have certified medical interpreters available at no cost, at any time of the day or night and in compliance with federal and state laws, to assist . These interpreters work with our doctors and staff throughout MHP, providing verbal interpretation and written translation. MHP is excited to offer these services for staff and patients to better serve the diverse needs of our community.

To call MHP with the help of an interpreter:

  • For Spanish, dial 317.642.5310.
    • Press ‘1’ for Pediatrics and OBGYN. Press ‘2’ for all other departments or practices. You will be connected to a Spanish interpreter who will help you call the correct area.
  • For all other languages, dial 317.666.8963.
    • The operator will answer in English. Say the name of your language or start speaking slowly and clearly in your native language. The operator will answer you in your language and get an interpreter for you. The interpreter will help you call MHP and stay with you on the phone until the call is completed.

Tips for Communicating Through an Interpreter:

  • Ask for an interpreter if you need one. Interpreter services are available at no cost to you.
  • Speak in your preferred language. You do not need to speak English if you are more comfortable using another language.
  • Talk directly to your doctor or nurse. Speak to your healthcare provider, not the interpreter.
  • Speak in short sentences and pause often. This gives the interpreter time to accurately interpret what is being said.
  • Tell the interpreter if you do not understand something. It is important that you fully understand your care, medications, and instructions.
  • Ask questions. Do not hesitate to ask for clarification if anything is unclear.
  • Share important health information. Be open and honest about your symptoms, medical history, and concerns.
  • Know that interpreters are confidential. Medical interpreters are trained professionals who keep your information private.
  • Avoid using family or friends as interpreters when possible. Certified medical interpreters are trained to accurately communicate medical information.
