Ion™ Robotic Lung Cancer Diagnosis at MHP

At Major Health Partners (MHP), we’re leading the way in minimally invasive lung cancer diagnosis with the innovative Ion™ robotic-assisted bronchoscopy system. This powerful tool helps doctors detect lung cancer earlier and more accurately, especially in hard-to-reach areas of the lung.

What Is the Ion™ System?

The Ion system features a thin, flexible robotic catheter that can navigate deep into the lungs—including areas that traditional methods can’t reach, such as small nodules outside the airways. With Ion, doctors can take a biopsy from nearly anywhere in the lungs, leading to:

  • Faster and more accurate diagnosis
  • Earlier detection of lung cancer
  • A quicker start to treatment

How It Works

Ion is made by Intuitive, the same company behind the da Vinci® surgical system, and it’s built on more than 20 years of robotic-assisted innovation.

Here’s how a bronchoscopy with Ion works:

  1. The physician uses a controller to guide the catheter to the target spot
  2. The catheter bends up to 180° in any direction to move through tight or complex airways
  3. It can reach all 18 segments of the lungs to take a precise biopsy

Because it’s minimally invasive, this approach can reduce the risk of complications like a collapsed lung and often allows for same-day diagnosis and treatment.

Benefits for Patients

  • Earlier and more accurate diagnosis
  • Minimally invasive with fewer risks
  • Reduced chance of complications
  • Smaller incisions and quicker recovery
  • Better outcomes and faster path to care

Who Is It For?

The Ion system may be right for you if:

  • You have a small or hard-to-reach lung nodule
  • You need a biopsy but want to avoid more invasive procedures
  • Previous tests weren’t able to reach the area of concern
