Raising Kids in a Digital World

Technology is everywhere—TVs, smartphones, tablets, and social media. It can be fun and helpful, but too much can be overwhelming. How much screen time is okay? When is it too early?

At MHP, we’re here to help families find the right balance. Our goal is to promote social growth while teaching smart and safe technology use.

Tips for Healthy Tech Use

For Everyday Life:

  • No screens at mealtime – Talk, play, and connect instead.
  • Social interaction first – People before devices.
  • Practice real communication – Encourage eye contact and proper physical interaction.

By Age:

  • 0–18 months: No screens (except video chatting).
  • 18–24 months: Only high-quality content, watched together.
  • 2–5 years: Limit to 1 hour or less per day.
  • 6+ years: Create a family media plan with clear boundaries and expectations

Other Key Tips:

  • Keep screens out of bedrooms.
  • Focus on quality over quantity—co-view content and make sure it’s appropriate
  • Power down at least 1 hour before bed.
  • No smartphones before high school.
  • No social media before age 16.
  • Support phone-free school environments.
