When should I consider COVID-19 tested?

  • COVID-19 testing is recommended for patients who currently have symptoms, or who have had direct exposure to a person with COVID-19. If you have a new onset of viral or flu-like symptoms including but not limited to cough, fever, shortness of breath, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea or muscle aches within the past 14 days, you should consider getting testing.

Where can I get tested?

The Coronavirus section of the Indiana Health Department's website lists COVID-19 testing sites in every county. You can look for testing sites in your county here: https://www.coronavirus.in.gov/2524.htm

  • The map shows both free community test sites as well as healthcare providers or retail sites, like pharmacies and doctor's offices. You can also see which sites offer rapid antigen tests.

  • Depending on your insurance/deductible, you may inquire a charge for Covid testing. If you have been exposed or are experiencing symptoms and are uninsured, your test will be billed to a federal program. There will be no cost to you.

What should I do if I have been diagnosed with COVID-19?

  • Stay home except for medical appointments. People who are mildly ill with COVID-19 are able to isolate at home during their illness. This means that you should restrict activities outside your home, except for medical care. Do not go to work, school or public areas, and you should avoid public transportation, ride sharing or taxis while sick.
  • Stay away from others as much as possible, including in your home. Try to stay in a specific room and away from other people in your home.
  • Avoid sharing personal household items, and wash items thoroughly after use with soap and water.
